As always, this is Matt from Frunk To Trunk. Our garage has a 2026 Model Y Performance and a 2025 Model Y Long Range AWD, and they share the same home charging setup. People ask me which one to get, so here is a straight comparison using Tesla’s own numbers, plus how I would think about the choice.
One naming note: on tesla.com the Long Range All-Wheel Drive is now listed as the Model Y Premium All-Wheel Drive. The numbers below are Tesla’s current specs. If you are shopping for a 2025 or used car, check the specs for that exact model year.

What the Performance adds
According to Tesla, the Model Y Performance adds an adaptive suspension, a carbon spoiler and more aerodynamic front and rear fascias, 21-inch wheels, heated and ventilated front sport seats with extra bolstering and powered thigh extenders, carbon fiber inserts in the doors and dashboard, and an upgraded 16-inch center touchscreen.
What the Long Range AWD does better
- Range: 327 miles vs 306 miles (EPA est.).
- Seats: available with up to 7 seats. The Performance seats 5.
- Ground clearance: 6.6 inches vs 6 inches.
- Supercharging stops: Tesla lists more range added in 15 minutes (up to 169 miles vs 144 miles).
- Price: the Performance costs more. Check the configurator for today’s prices.
My take, owning both
Having both in the garage, the way I think about it is simple. The Long Range AWD is the sensible all-rounder: more range, the option of a third row, and everything most families need. The Performance is for people who want the quickest Model Y and the sportier setup, and are fine giving up some range and seats for it. Before you decide, test drive both on roads you actually drive.
I previously owned a Model 3 RWD, so I have lived with both body styles. If you are still deciding between a Model Y and a Model 3, read Model Y vs Model 3 (2026): An Owner’s Guide and Which Tesla Should You Buy in 2026?.
Charging at home
Our two Model Ys share one home charging setup; for most households each car only needs a top-up most nights. Tesla’s support page lists a 32 A home charging limit for the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive and Model Y All-Wheel Drive; the Premium and Performance trims are not on that list. See Best Tesla Home Charger (2026) for the options.
Accessories for either one
Mats and trunk liners first: 3W Auto Life (code FRUNKTOTRUNK, 33% off). Paint protection: Blackout Empire (code FRUNKTOTRUNK, 10% off). For fit tips on the refresh, see Best Model Y Juniper Accessories (2026).
